IMAGO
SYNOPSIS
IMAGO is a deep investigation into the intricacies of human relationships, meditating on the complex choices we make that inevitably form the architectures of our connections Through twelve ever-changing chapters, IMAGO depicts a profound journey of two men as they navigate environments of interaction, conflict, denial, and acceptance, culminating in an ending left for the audience to determine.
An original score, composed by Sean Pett, alongside works by Max Richter and Vivaldi, guides this full-length work. The complex musical work combines known classical compositions that have been distorted in surprising intervals with unique and emotively stirring modern pieces, each leaving a unique voice within the unfolding narrative. A varied, stimulating aural landscape encaptures the physicality of the work and its more hidden messages, as if viewing life through a single year, its bitter winters and hopeful springs.
The startling yet minimalist scenography of IMAGO leaves it as a remembered image that refuses to remain still in the mind, using carefully crafted floral bouquets and small white pillars to demonstrate the constantly moving nature of the work amidst subtly hidden stories within their design.
The integral use of flowers throughout the work reflects back to the symbolism flowers have had in history. Taking from the language of flowers as a catalyst point, IMAGO makes reference to the hidden meanings a flower may describe to another. But its main inspiration is the nature of disguising something, not wanting to be said, with something beautiful, a human trait we constantly display.
IMAGO brings to light our nature to obscure the truth with beauty, in fear of being hurt or in fear of having to accept. Overall, IMAGO is a powerful and thought-provoking performance that challenges its audience to confront the hidden dysfunctions that lie at the heart of our relationships. It is a deeply moving and insightful exploration of the human condition that will leave a pondering on its themes long after the performance has ended. A stirring work that allows the appreciation of contemporary dance at its highest calibre whilst offering a space for personal identification amidst a nuanced narrative.
